Lady Gaga stole the spotlight in 2019 with her award-winning performance in A Star is Born, a romantic musical produced by Bradley Cooper. The film, released in 2018, was Lady Gaga’s acting debut after dominating the music industry for years.
With all the fame and recognition she earned from the film, there was no doubt that Gaga’s first appearance at the 2019 Oscars would be unforgettable. Fans eagerly counted down the days till they got to see their idol grace the red carpet, and when she did, she shocked us all.
Even though the actress wore a rather simple Brandon Maxwell dress, it was her necklace that stole the show. The 128-caret yellow diamond was the perfect accessory to her strapless black ballgown, especially since the sparkler cost a whopping $30 million!
Of course, a star of Gaga’s caliber doesn’t have to pay for any outfits or accessories she wears to red carpet events. In fact, brands have to chase her with freebies in order to get some free PR.
Oftentimes, they even have to pay the celebrities to get them to wear their designs to high profile events. And the necklace Gaga wore to the Academy Awards was no different. She was allowed to wear the $30-million Tiffany & Co sparkler to the event with the condition that she would return the piece once the night was over.
The necklace is considered ‘priceless’ because it was once worn by the great Audrey Hepburn in her 1961 film, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. So even a superstar like Lady Gaga wasn’t allowed to keep it for more than a few hours.
But the singer-turned-actress made a mistake that almost got her in a chase with the security guards. Unknowingly, Gaga tried to walk out the award ceremony with the necklace still around her neck. She was merely planning to make a quick run to the nearest Taco Bell, but the security guards stopped her.
In a recent interview, Gaga said that when Tiffany & Co. found out that she left the venue with the necklace, they immediately panicked.
The singer never goes anywhere without her personal bodyguards, but since she was wearing such a precious necklace that night, Tiffany assigned some of their own men to make sure that the diamond didn’t get lost or stolen.
At the end of the night, when she tried to leave without returning the necklace, a car with Tiffany’s bodyguards pulled her over and politely asked her to return the diamond.
