Chelsea Handler recently opened up about a short-lived romantic connection with celebrity chef Bobby Flay, sharing details of what she described as a disappointing dating experience.
During an appearance on Kristin Cavallari’s “Let’s Be Honest” podcast, the comedian revealed the story while discussing memorable celebrity dates that did not go as planned.
The conversation began when Cavallari asked Handler to share a “bad celebrity date story” that had never been told publicly. Handler quickly named Bobby Flay, best known for “Iron Chef America” and “Beat Bobby Flay,” explaining that the pair first connected through a mutual friend.
According to Handler, the early conversations involved phone calls and light flirting before they eventually met in person.
Chelsea Handler Shares Hotel Incident

Handler recalled staying at a hotel with friends when Flay contacted her and offered to order food for the group. Since he was familiar with the property, he reportedly insisted on choosing the meal himself.
“He wanted to order food for us,” Handler said on the podcast. “He was like, ‘Let me order your food for you. I love that hotel.’”
The situation took an awkward turn after the food arrived. Handler claimed that although Flay placed the order, she was left to pay the bill herself.
“And I’m like, ‘What?’” she recalled. Handler added that someone later told her, “Oh yeah. He’s really cheap.”
The comedian made it clear that generosity matters in relationships. “If you’re penurious, I’m not interested in you,” she said. “I’m generous and I like people to be generous with their money.”
Why the Relationship Didn’t Last
Despite the uncomfortable first impression, Handler and Flay still went on a date afterward. That outing also failed to spark a connection.
“It was just like, messy,” Handler said, while avoiding specific details about what went wrong.
The Independent reportedly contacted Flay’s representative for comment following Handler’s remarks.
Flay, 61, has had several high-profile relationships over the years. The chef was first married to fellow chef Debra Ponzek from 1991 to 1993. He later married television host Kate Connelly, with whom he shares daughter Sophie Flay, now 30. Their marriage lasted from 1995 to 1998. His third marriage was to “Law & Order: SVU” actor Stephanie March from 2005 until 2015.
Bobby Flay’s Current Relationship

Flay is currently dating chef and restaurateur Brooke Williamson. Reports about their relationship surfaced in March 2025.
Months before those headlines appeared, Flay joined Cavallari on her “Let’s Be Honest” podcast and discussed asking her out to dinner. He claimed he sent her a direct message inviting her to dinner while visiting Nashville, though the invitation was rejected.
“I DMed you,” Flay said during the episode. “I’m going to be in Nashville for one night, can I take you to dinner?”
Cavallari remembered the exchange differently. She suggested she may have told him she was exhausted by dating at the time rather than saying she was already seeing someone.
Flay disagreed and joked about the misunderstanding before shifting the conversation toward relationships and marriage. While discussing his personal life, he admitted marriage “hasn’t been the best situation” for him and said he would rather have a long-term life partner than marry again.
Chelsea Handler’s comments added another unexpected celebrity dating story to the growing list of podcast revelations making headlines. Her candid remarks about Bobby Flay offered a mix of humor, discomfort, and honesty while also giving listeners a closer look at the personalities behind two well-known entertainment figures.
